Kairat Bakenov is the General Director of LLP "KazNII Energy named after. Sh.Ch. Chokin" and a corresponding member of the National Academy of Engineering. Between 2001 and 2016, he worked at the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications", and worked his way up from a junior researcher to the rector of the university. From 2016 to 2018, he worked as the Head of the project team, and from 2018 to the present, he has been working as the General Director of the LLP "Kazakh Research Institute of Energy named after. Ak. Sh.Ch. Chokin”. Currently, he actively participates in the preparation of undergraduates and doctoral students at AUPET.

He has been involved in the use of renewable energy sources since entering graduate school in 1996, and participated in the development of the first specialization of "Renewable Energy Sources" for the educational program "Power Engineering". Research topics include electromechanical converters for wind power plants, hydro turbines for small hydropower plants, distributed generation, and assessment of the potential of renewable energy sources.
